Apart from the obvious historical and cultural differences between Australia and New Zealand we share many similarities. However there are some quirky differences we found in the South Island that deserve a mention.

This one needs a trim - regrowth has
started |
In Australia we plant a few trees in a bit of a line and call it a wind break.
Throughout the South Island the wind breaks are made mainly of pine trees grown closely together. Not only are they grown in very orderly rows, but they are trimmed in a rectangular shape so that they look like green bricks or Lego pieces arranged in a line. This is so that they grow more densely and are more effective. They make ours look a bit sloppy.

Selling 'butties' at a community market |
In Australia we put butter on bread and add a filling and call it a
sandwich.
In New Zealand they put butter on bread and add a filling and call it a
buttie.
Wouldn't it be boring if everything was the same!
